Three (not) easy pieces

The fact that Matteo De Ponti and Laura Macagno are in love does not surprise. He comes from Milan, for ten years he has been brand manager for Driade; she comes from Argentina, she has a degree in economics and yet she has relentless creativity. In 2011 they establish their brand in Milan: «We were looking for an impressive name and we could not find even one. Then, one day, the brainwave: sixteen years before, Laura’s parents adopted a little parrot fallen from a tree. They called it Colé as according to Driade’s agenda it was the day of Saint Colette; a few months later, Laura got pregnant of our first child, then we interpreted this like a sort of announcement». The name is the first piece of an extremely varied moodboard, ranging from Borges to Bauhaus, from Escher to Mondrian, from the Flaming to Man Ray. I ask Matteo and Laura to tell me the story of three pieces in the room. «Our icon piece possibly is the Tria chair, inspired from Escher’s impossible encounters. It is a three-leg chair whose frame is made up of three identical curved wood elements. When I described the prototype to one of my suppliers, he replied: I’ve never done anything like this before. One week later, he called me back: he had already finished. We had not even made any agreement yet!». A challenge is a challenge; and if Escher is involved, it must be accepted perforce. «The second piece is the folding screen at your back. Its name is Opto, it is inspired from Bauhaus works by László Moholy-Nagy and from the New York skyline. It is a very expensive piece and it is not easy to adapt to a room, but for us it has a great communication value– Moholy-Nagy was Matteo’s favourite one when I met him ». The last piece: three mirrors that are three masks. The mirror reflects, the mask conceals: also in this case, the symbolic value is strong. It comes to three African masks: Hawa, Bikita, Eze. He have called them Three Wise Mirrors, and we often think of them like the Three Wise Men. Hawa – tells me Laura – is the piece with the lowest sales. Perhaps because it is round?», she wonders. «And yet it’s weird: it is also the only one that seems to be happy».
