To the rhythm of silk
Text Cesare Cunaccia
Opening today, December 2, inside Hermès temporary store on via dei Condotti 67 in Rome and running until January 31, 2018 is a special idea of ephemeral place informed by a record store. With Silk Mix, the delight of music meets the tactile and aesthetic delight of silk against an exquisitely masculine playground. Men’s silk square scarves are turned into LP record covers while the repetition of ties’ signature patterns covers the front of music cassettes. The minds behind this unique and eclectic sensory experience are the Artistic Director of Hermès’ Men’s Universe, Véronique Nichanian, Creative Director of Men’s Silk, Christophe Goineau, Thierry Planelle, in charge of the music selection, as well as three esteemed names responsible for Hermès’ ready-to-wear soundtracks.
Next to the records, which are neatly organized on the shelves, are Hermès signature carres, including some hanging on the walls, and the ties, all creating a dialogue of experiences, colors, sounds and emotions combined with the tactile softness of silk. More than that, Silk Mix is some sort of dreamy dimension. Each record or carré is matched with a track from the soundtrack of a show presented over the last eight years while music cassettes – patterned with the motifs of the house’s ties – are paired with a track from 2017. Figures speak eloquently of the history of the maison: two hundred and twenty five styles and fifty-five silk scarves patterns and one hundred and twenty five ties patterns. As it’s typical of Hermès’ heritage, the themes are varied and evocative and appoint silk as the fabric of choice to bring to life a tale that includes music references, abstract chromatic shapes, purism and decorativism, a graphic approach and pictorial freedom. Next come the world of sport, in particular horse-riding, various types of games, literature and the vivifying beauty of nature and art to be styled according to the creativity of the moment to suit one’s taste or temperament, a special day or the mood.
Architecture studio Park Associati transformed the one hundred and twenty square meter space on via Condotti into an environment dedicated to listening, complete with rubber-lined walls mimicking a recording studio, metallic accents and neon frames. After the debut in Madrid and Rome, Silk Mix will travel to Seoul and continue ahead on a trip around the world.
