I have said black has it all. White too. Their beauty is absolute. It is the perfect harmony, said Gabrielle Chanel. And for Coco, color was a major element which she used in a very personal, non-conventional, often daring way. Red, black, gold, white and beige are five emblematic colors of the French house, now at the core of Coco Codes, the new makeup collection for 2017 conceived by Italian-born Lucia Pica, Chanel’s Global Creative Makeup & Color Designer. Pica, who for Fall 2016 created an ‘all-red’ collection, Chanel Collection Rouge N°1, for Spring revisits and interprets the five iconic Chanel colors, including red, so strongly connected to the soul and the life of Coco, with new products and unexpected nuances, adding her signature irreverent touch, just like Coco did. Lucia invites all women to get creative with color and envisage their own beauty codes, questioning the idea of conventional looks, playing with these amazing nuances, in contrast and in harmony with each other, delicate and vibrant, understated and bold.

One of the much-awaited products is definitely the Coco Codes Exclusive Creation, a four-shade blush, two matte and two satin textures, a blend of dark and light tones to be used alone or mixed together for a bonne mine effect, to highlight or sculpt the face. In addition, the new gold beige shade Élégance joins the Joues Contrast line. The gaze is underlined and embellished with two new Les 4 Ombres palettes Codes Élégants and Codes Subtilsthat come in scintillating, rich hues ranging from gold to beige through platinum and brown, and with two new shades of the Stylo Yeux Waterproof eye pencil, Noir Pétrole and Mat Taupe. For the lips, Lucia Pica proposes two new red shades for the Rouge Allure line, a fresh coral and a flame red. Two silky matte beige nuances enhance the Rouge Allure Velvet offering, while two new additions to Rouge Coco Shine, Beige Doré and Noire Moderne, enable to play with layering, a favorite technique with Pica, and to dress lips in rouge noire also in springtime. The hands are embellished with the new refined tones of Le Vernis Longue Tenue (Rouge Red, Blanc White, Beige Beige) plus a standout top coat, Black Métamorphosis. The custom concept that permeates the entire Coco Codes collection is applied, therefore, also to manicure.

Besides Coco Codes, the new make-up proposal for Spring includes twelve nuances, from nude to deep red, of Le Rouge Crayon de Coleur, the longwear lip crayon that adds a satin finish; and twenty-four tones of Rouge Coco Gloss, personally conceived by Pica, featuring refreshingly light textures, a concentrate of ‘joie de vivre’, alongside three top coats, from transparent to intense. Lucia Pica suggests a fresh and inspiring approach to makeup, inviting women to combine, blend and wear the new shades in a very personal manner.

There is a sense of autobiography in what Gabrielle Chanel did. She could not help using these colors — these ‘codes’. This was who she was. It was her life. Lucia Pica.

The new Chanel Make Up for Spring 2017 hit stores in February 2017.
